SELECTED WORKS of ‘OUTSIDE ARTIST’

JUSTIN McCARTHY

MARCH 1st to MAY 30th
2nd Floor

Justin McCarthy Selected works of ‘Outside Artist’ Justin McCarthy will be on exhibit at Casa Frela Gallery, 47 West 119th Street, March 1st to May 30th 2013, 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm daily.

Justin McCarthy’s work was largely ignored until 1960, when collector Dorothy Strauser discovered him at an outdoor show in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. McCarthy soon joined the “Strauser Circle,” which included such other folk artists as Jack Savitsky, Victor Joseph Gatto and “Old Ironsides” Pry. His work was first featured with the aforementioned artists in a travelling exhibition, “Seventeen Naïve Painters,” organized by MOMA in New York City.

McCarthy was as eclectic in his choice of subjects as he was with materials. He would draw and paint anything if it interested him on anything he had at hand with acrylics, watercolors, oils, crayons, pencils. McCarthy portrayed the people of his time sans glamour or glitter.

Justin McCarthy’s work has appeared at the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of American Folk Art, all in New York City, as well as in numerous gallery shows. McCarthy is recognized as a major folk artist of his time, with a reputation that continues to grow.
